Overview

Eternal Angola

From the vibrant capital of Luanda, one of the oldest cities in sub-Saharan Africa, to verdant, volcanic Lubango and onto the desert beaches of Namibe, this is a weeklong journey through a country in the midst of an epic rebirth. A nation rising out of hardship to become one of the most alluring destinations on the continent—with culinary and cultural scenes punching far above their weight.

Guided by Chef Helt Araújo, one of the country’s great culinary minds and a leader of its current reinvention, we will dine in open-air markets and elegant urban restaurants, taste Angolan wines at a private chef’s dinner on the beach, and join an indigenous tribe for a whole-goat roast. We will meet renegade farmers and sommeliers, kitchen-savant aunties, and visionary chefs on a quest to revive food traditions that predate the Portuguese conquest. Joined also by the Angolan writer Cláudio Silva, we will traverse this righteous land from mountain to coast and meet the people rewriting its destiny. Light activity level. Meat-centric itinerary.

Where You’ll Stay

Epic Sana

Epic Sana

Rooftop Luxury

We very rarely do chains, but this one is different. Sana Hotels are well-known throughout the Lusophone world, but the Epic Sana Luanda is a jewel in Sana’s crown, one of the first luxury hotels to flourish in the new peacetime Angola. With our close connections to the management team, and their excellent rooms and amenities, Epic Sana Luanda is a natural home for us in the capital

Pululukwa Resort

Pululukwa Resort

Lubango Hideaway

Tucked among the lush vegetation of Lubango, the 200-acre Pululukwa Resort comprises 60 luxury bungalows spread over three villages and connected by long walkways. “Pululukwa” means “rest the body,” and this is indeed an ideal setting to unwind from our exploration of verdant, high-altitude Lubango at the edge of natural terrain roamed by zebras, ostriches, alligators, and countless bird species.

Oceanus Baía das Pipas

Oceanus Baía das Pipas

Paradise to yourself

Oceanus Baía das Pipas is best accessible through a new highway road that only our guide Cláudio seems to know. It’s a family-run nearly secret spot on a gorgeous beach where you can swim in the warm Atlantic waters while fishermen haul their wooden boats onto the sand a few hundred yards away. The cabanas are rustic but comfortable, and combined with chef Anselmo Silva’s private dinner, it is the best version of Angola’s Namibe coast.
