Lisbon’s huge, austere cathedral, the oldest of its many churches, was founded in 1150. You have to pay to enter the cloisters, but it’s worth it to soak up their atmosphere. Don’t miss the eccentric tile painting of Lisbon’s patron saint, St Anthony, preaching to the eager fish while the human ignore him—it’s round the corner to the left when you go in.
