Description
Presented by Roads & Kingdoms, the Anti-ICE Supper Club is a series of fundraising dinners in support of local organizations defending communities under attack—our small but vital contribution to the fight for immigrant America.
After launching last month in Los Angeles, the Anti-ICE Supper Club moves to the East Bay for an Afro-Latin celebration hosted by Chef Nelson German at his Oakland social club, Sobre Mesa, together with R&K’s Nathan Thornburgh. Rooted in culture and community, Sobre Mesa is a soulful gathering space that celebrates heritage, creativity, and connection. Enjoy stuffed sweet plantains, suya beef empanaditas, bacalao croquetas, and other dishes that represent Chef Nelson’s Afro-Latin and Caribbean culture, along with delicious drinks and local DJs on the decks.
When: March 8, 2026; 6:30-9:30 pm
Where: Sobre Mesa, 1618 Franklin St, Oakland, California
Price: $65, includes passed bites + one drink (followed by cash bar)
Net proceeds benefit: Bay Resistance: a broad-based, multi-racial coalition of community groups, faith organizations, labor unions, and everyday neighbors organizing to build mass resistance against ICE, federal overreach, militarization, and the criminalization of our communities. Bay Resistance believes in building power from the ground up—through solidarity, mutual aid, and collective action. Can’t attend but want to support Bay Resistance? Contribute directly here.
“The Anti-ICE Supper Club is deeply personal for me, because it centers the dignity, stories, and humanity of the very communities that shaped who I am.”
— Chef Nelson German, Sobre Mesa
“As a child of immigrants, I know what it means to carry your culture on your body and your heart—to cook from memory, from resilience, from love,” says Chef Nelson German. “Food has always been our language of belonging, and through this table we’re turning it into solidarity, protection, and collective care.”
Nelson German is the Dominican American chef-owner behind Oakland’s alaMar Kitchen & Bar, the Afro-Latin cocktail lounge Sobre Mesa, and Meski, a soulful Afro-Latin brunch and dinner destination in San Francisco. A Top Chef Season 18 contestant and one of Plate’s “2020 Chefs to Watch,” Nelson’s unorthodox culinary style blends his Dominican heritage, African roots, and Mediterranean and Asian influences with a deep love of local, sustainable California ingredients. His work has been featured in The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Ebony, Forbes, KQED, KRON, and more.
Nathan Thornburgh co-founded Roads & Kingdoms in 2012 and ran the independent media company with Anthony Bourdain and co-founders Matt Goulding and Doug Hughmanick for years, winning numerous awards, including a Primetime Emmy and a National Magazine Award. In recent years, R&K launched the League of Travelers, offering small-group culinary journeys, and R&K Insiders, a membership program that includes a new print magazine and digital editorial. The Anti-ICE Supper Club is the successor to the Banned Countries Dinners they launched in 2017 with Anthony Bourdain and chefs from the Somali, Persian, and Syrian diasporas.
