Description
Presented by Roads & Kingdoms, The Anti-ICE Supper Club is a series of fundraising dinners in support of local organizations defending communities under attack—our small but vital contribution to the fight for immigrant America.
A Chicago institution, Lula Cafe has been cooking with the seasons since 1999, with the belief that the table is always a place for community. For their collaborative Anti-ICE Supper Club dinner, they will cook with their hearts first: ingredient-driven, vegetable-forward, featuring the first products of the midwestern spring. A family-style spread that will move through the few but delicious gifts of early May, with wine pairings by Erin Drain.
When: Tuesday, May 5, 6:30-9:30 pm
Where: Loulou by Lula (Lula Cafe’s private dinner space): 3057 W Logan Blvd, Chicago
Tickets: $150, includes dinner with wine pairings
Net proceeds benefit: The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, a statewide coalition of more than 130 community-based organizations, faith institutions, unions, service providers, and advocacy groups working together to defend and advance the rights of immigrants and refugees. Through organizing, advocacy, and collective action, ICIRR works to push back against deportation and build long-term power for immigrant communities. “We intend to help in whatever small way we can—by cooking, by welcoming friends, by bringing caring folks together around our shared table and this shared goal.”
— Jason Hammel, Lula Cafe
“During this past year, when so many of our neighbors and friends face abduction and unjust treatment by our federal government, the need for support for immigrant justice is strong—especially in the restaurant community,” says Jason Hammel, co-founder of Lula Cafe. “We are proud to partner with Roads & Kingdoms to host an Anti-ICE dinner at our new space in Logan Square,” he continues. “We hope to raise critical funds for the work at ICIRR and raise awareness that the fight for immigrant justice is ongoing.”
Lula Cafe was founded in Logan Square in 1999 by chef Jason Hammel and Amalea Tshilds. In 2024, Lula won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Hospitality. Hammel is also the co-founder of Pilot Light, a Chicago nonprofit integrating food education into public school classrooms.
Nathan Thornburgh co-founded Roads & Kingdoms in 2012 and ran the independent media company with Anthony Bourdain and co-founders Matt Goulding and Doug Hughmanick for years, winning numerous awards, including a Primetime Emmy and a National Magazine Award. In recent years, R&K launched the League of Travelers, offering small-group culinary journeys, and R&K Insiders, a membership program that includes a new print magazine and digital editorial. The Anti-ICE Supper Club is the successor to the Banned Countries Dinners they launched in 2017 with Anthony Bourdain and chefs from the Somali, Persian, and Syrian diasporas.
