Overview

Eternal Angola

From the vibrant capital of Luanda, one of the oldest cities in sub-Saharan Africa, to verdant, volcanic Lubango and onto the desert beaches of Namibe, this is a weeklong journey through a country in the midst of an epic rebirth. A nation rising out of hardship, bondage, and civil war to become one of the most alluring destinations on the continent—with culinary and cultural scenes punching far above their weight.

Guided by Chef Helt Araújo, one of the country’s great culinary minds and a leader of its current reinvention, we will dine in open-air markets and elegant urban restaurants, taste Angolan wines at a private chef’s dinner on the beach, and join an indigenous tribe for a whole-goat roast. We will meet renegade farmers and sommeliers, kitchen-savant aunties, and visionary chefs on a quest to revive food traditions that predate the Portuguese conquest. Joined also by the Angolan writer Cláudio Silva and Roads & Kingdoms co-founder Nathan Thornburgh, we will traverse this righteous land from mountain to coast and meet the people rewriting its destiny.

Where You’ll Stay

Intercontinental Luanda

Intercontinental Luanda

Sky-High Luxury

We very rarely do chains, but this one is different. The first international hotel brand to open in Angola, the Intercontinental Luanda occupies one of the tallest buildings of its capital city. Only 20 years after the end of the country’s brutal civil war, the arrival of the Intercontinental signified Angola’s rebirth as a cultural hub open to foreign visitors (and the rooms are very nice, too).

Pululukwa Resort

Pululukwa Resort

Lubango Hideaway

Tucked among the lush vegetation of Lubango, the 200-acre Pululukwa Resort comprises 60 luxury bungalows spread over three villages and connected by long walkways. “Pululukwa” means “rest the body,” and this is indeed an ideal setting to unwind from our exploration of verdant, high-altitude Lubango at the edge of natural terrain roamed by zebras, ostriches, alligators, and countless bird species.

  • It was the savvy hosts, delicious food, curated experiences, and cooking together in a small group setting that made it magical.

From the future-facing heart of contemporary Cape Town to the winelands of Stellenbosch and Bot River, this is a weeklong journey across one of the most naturally abundant and culturally complex places on this planet. Our guide is none other than Reuben Riffel, one of the country’s most celebrated chefs whose success would have been unimaginable under the Apartheid system into which he was born. Joined by Roads & Kingdoms cofounder Nathan Thornburgh and the Angolan writer Cláudio Silva, Reuben will bring us behind the scenes of his culinary world—culminating in a hilltop Braai at sunset with descendants of southern Africa’s first people.
