This is a place you come to only for the view. There isn’t really anything else to do at the Carlton Centre, so skip it if you’re not into high places. At one point, the Carlton Centre was the “Top of Africa,” the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere, and home to a five-star hotel that welcomed Johannesburg’s wealthiest visitors. Now, it’s a mixed-used commercial building filled mostly with offices and a handful of shops and restaurants that have all seen better years. While the Centre itself is long overdue for some TLC, it remains the premier place in Joburg for a panoramic view of the city. The viewing deck is enclosed, so the view can be appreciated in every kind of weather. You can see Soweto through a telescope any day, and with your naked eye on a clear one.
