WHAT TO DRINK: Cocktails at Six Cocktail Bar.
Six Cocktail Bar is a Melville drinking hole popular among students and other young locals. With reliably good cocktails and a happy hour that lasts from noon to 7 p.m., Six is a laid-back place with art on its orange-red walls and tables full of well-dressed clientele. Come before the crowds do during happy hour and order as many mojitos as you can before it ends. The bartenders are consummate professionals and they know their regulars, but are just as friendly, attentive, and entertaining to newcomers. There’s usually classic R&B, reggae, and soul music playing at just the right volume over the loudspeakers, but like any self-respecting bar in town, Six hosts weekly live jazz sessions, which begin every Wednesday at 8 p.m.
For drunk food, we recommend Six’s famous nachos for 75 rands (US$5), which they’ve been making the same way since the bar first opened sixteen years ago. Spicy, crunchy, greasy, and piled with sticky melted cheese—your stomach and your liver will thank you for these if you go overboard with the mojitos. Their toppings of salsa, jalapenos, guacamole, and cheddar and mozzarella cheese are pretty typical restaurant nacho fare, but Six adds their own twist: dhai and chili sauces on the side. You can also add chicken, meat, or extra vegetables, if you’re on a diet. After digging into these, maybe you’ll be sober enough to order another mojito or two.
