Four years ago, it occurred to me to tattoo a map of the Mexico City Metro on my arm. I had my doubts at first, but when I told my mother, who grew up in a world without tattoos and still has trouble understanding our generation’s need to dye our skin, she exclaimed, “Ugh! It’s going to look like veins!” That’s when I knew I had to do it. “Exactly! It’s the veins of the city!” I exclaimed, maybe a bit over excited, then called to set up my appointment while my mother rolled her eyes.
