Punk Rock Karaoke SxSW: How to Enter

Roads & Kingdoms and Japan House Present:

Live Band Karaoke Contest judged by Anthony Bourdain and Friends

At Vulcan Gas Company in Austin, Texas
March 14, 2016
10pm-Midnight

Join us for an evening featuring a mic-dropping panel of chefs—Anthony Bourdain, José Andrés, Laura Sawicki, Ludo Lefebvre and R&K co-founder Matt Goulding—whose only qualification for judging punk rock karaoke is sheer enthusiasm and decades of shouting along to these songs in kitchens. The first part of the event will be an on-stage conversation between Bourdain and Goulding (author of Rice, Noodle, Fish: Deep Travels through Japan’s Food Culture) about eating one’s face off in Japan.

The contest will begin at 10:30pm with the backing band Punk Rock Karaoke—DFW, from Dallas, Tx. Japanese grill fare (pork belly, beef heart skewers and more) will be provided by Fukumoto Austin.

The Judges:

Ten lucky contestants will get to sing in front of the judges for a chance to win prizes including high-end knives from Global Knives. To enter, tweet a 15-second video of you singing a song from the list below and hashtag #drinkdrinksingsing. Or, if you’re shy until you’ve got a mic in hand, you can email us at events@roadsandkingdoms.com. Your video doesn’t have to be slickly produced, just you and your phone camera and all that joyful rage you’ve got inside.

R&K WILL NOT COVER TRAVEL FOR CONTESTANTS. But if you are selected, you won’t need a SxSW badge. All other (non-singing) partygoers must be SxSW badgeholders. Only selected contestants will get to sing: there won’t be a sign up sheet at the event.

If you are chosen, make sure you KNOW the song. Choose one you’ve been singing forever in the car, in your head, in the shower or at the wall. Lyrics will be provided on a stand in front of you, not on a large screen scroll like a karaoke bar.

The deadline for submissions is March 11th, 2016 at 10pm EST.
